Absolut To Trial A Paper Bottle In Europe

October 18,2020

Pernod Ricard Vodka company Absolut will start prototype trials for a new paper bottle in the UK and Sweden later this month in the next step towards sustainability.

The paper bottle prototypes will be tested with two products, Absolut Vodka (40% ABV) and Absolut Mixt (4% ABV) and will be launched initially in the UK and Sweden.

The bottles are made with 57 per cent paper and 43 per cent recycled plastic, and are themselves recyclable. The first production run is set to go into testing this November; if successful, TAC will start work on a fully bio-based bottle – its ultimate goal.

Niclas Appelquist, innovation director of future packaging at Absolut, said, “We’ve taken a concept and created a real-world prototype that is planned to be in controlled consumer testing in a matter of months.

“Our sustainability strategy is making a commitment to a fully circular process, and the rollout of our prototype is a step in the right direction toward that goal.”

The company will incorporate customer feedback into the second pilot scheduled for next spring. Danish beer company Carlsberg announced a paper bottle in 2019 and other beverage companies like Pepsi have taken steps to reduce plastic in their bottling processes. Johnnie Walker announced that they would introduce a paper bottle in spring 2021.

The former chief executive of Whyte & Mackay has revealed plans to build a new £15 million (US$19m) Scotch whisky distillery near Stirling.

The Wolfcraig Distillery project will incorporate a distillery, an interactive, education-focused visitor attraction, private tasting room and a 180-cover bistro restaurant and bar.

The site is the brainchild of Michael Lunn, former chairman and chief executive of Whyte & Mackay, and co-directors John Moore and Jamie Lunn.

The management team will be made up of Dr Alan Rutherford OBE, a former production director at Diageo, former Bacardi UK operations director Iain Lochhead, and Ian Macmillan, the former master distiller of Lowland distillery Bladnoch.

The facility will have the capacity to produce up to 1.5m litres of spirit per year and will make premium Wolfcraig Highland single malt Scotch whisky and a range of spirits.

Subject to planning approval, construction is expected to begin in spring 2021 with the distillery due to open in summer 2022. The site will employ around 50 full-time workers.

The distillery’s interactive visitor centre will showcase tales of Scotch whisky and the history of Stirling. The site will offer tours and a range of different experiences and masterclasses.

The project seeks to further establish the city of Stirling as a major food and drink tourist destination. The producer also hopes to operate a shuttle service between the distillery, the train station and Stirling Castle.

“Our distillery will encourage visitors and tourists to spend more time in and around Stirling, helping to boost both the local and national economies,” said Lunn.

“In addition to producing a premium Highland single malt, we want to offer a state-of-the-art immersive experience for people of all ages and knowledge levels. Our research indicates the distillery could attract around 90,000 visitors in its first year given its proximity to Glasgow and Edinburgh.”

The site has secured initial private funding with further investment opportunities being made available to the public through founder membership packages.

Cirilo Oropeza, creator and master distiller of Campari Group-owned Espolòn Tequila, has died at the age of 80.

Oropeza died on 5 October 2020 in his native Mexico, surrounded by family. With more than 50 years of industry experience, Espolòn was said to be the lifelong aspiration of Oropeza.

Oropeza’s passion for spirits started in 1965 when he began his career at Ingenio Potrero Distillery in Veracruz, Mexico, managing sugar cane quality control for the site’s rum. He had previously described himself as “intensely curious” and was fascinated by yeast.

Four years later, Oropeza took on a supervisor role at Oso Negro’s gin distillery in Tlaxcala, Mexico, and soon after assumed management of the gin and vodka distillation process.

The 1990s saw Oropeza move to Jose Cuervo’s distillery in Guadalajara, Mexico, where he supervised Tequila production.

Oropeza’s expertise was soon recognised by an entrepreneur, who asked him to help build a new distillery and Tequila brand in the Jalisco Highlands in 1995. This led to the creation of Espolón Tequila, with the first bottles shipped globally in 1998.

“I consider these Tequilas my second sons and care for them as I would my own family,” Oropeza once said of Espolón.

Oropeza was widely recognised for his passion and dedication to every step of the distilling process. He was also known to serenade the yeast with classical music daily during the fermentation process as he believed it would help the yeast activate due to the vibrations of the sound waves.

The Espolòn brand was snapped up by Italian firm Campari Group in 2009.
