Wild Turkey Announces Rare Breed Barrel Proof Rye

American bourbon distillers Wild Turkey has released its latest expression, a Rye whiskey that is barrel proof, with a bold taste called Rare Breed.

The expression will be a permanent edition to the Wild Turkey range and is bottled at 112.2 proof and is a blend of four, six, and eight-year-old non-chill filtered ryes whiskies.

With tasting notes that include sweet caramel apple, honey, vanilla, rye grain spice and charred oak, the finish offers spices mingle with fruit.

“At a time when rye whiskey is more widely appreciated than ever before, Wild Turkey continues our longstanding tradition of offering a wide range of rye whiskies that lend themselves to a variety of cocktails and consumption occasions” says Master Distiller Eddie Russell.

Giffard Creates Spicy Liqueur With French Peppers

French liqueur brand Giffard has expanded its range with its new spicy liqueur, which has been infused with native Espelette peppers.

Bottled at 40% ABV, the liqueur embraces two trends: spiciness and craftsmanship and offers an “intense spiciness with complex aromas” and “smooth and warm notes”.

The Giffard Piment d’Espelette liqueur is made with Espelette peppers, a mild to medium-hot chilli from the town of Espelette in France. To produce the liqueur, whole Espelette peppers are slowly macerated, along with a touch of dark Agricole rum from Martinique.

The liqueur can be served with a variety of spirits or in cocktails. Giffard said the degree of spiciness can be adjusted depending on how much of the liqueur is used.

“Our Piment d’Espelette liqueur is the perfect ingredient to add spiciness in cocktails, it enhances all flavours with consistency, but also delivers deep and complex aromas for a richer drinking experience,” said Raphaëlle Chaize, Giffard’s beverage expert.

Signature serves for the liqueur include a Tommy’s Margarita and a Spicy Basil Smash.

Fortnum & Mason Creates Cocktail Bitters

British luxury retailer Fortnum & Mason has expanded into cocktail bitters with the launch of a tea and honey-infused bottling.

Bottled at 37.5% ABV, the new Fortnum’s Tea & Honey Aromatic Cocktail Bitters has been created by Bob Petrie, the founder of UK-based producer Bob’s Bitters.

Two years in the making, the product is infused with honey from the Galician mountains in Spain and five teas – lapsang souchong, Formosa, chai spice, Ceylon and honey tea.

Fortnum & Mason recommends the addition of two or three drops to “transform” a cocktail or soft drink. It can be added to cocktails such as an Old Fashioned, Manhattan, Whisky Sour or a Breakfast Martini.

The signature serve for the expression is the Lemon, Lime and Bitters drink, which combines the bitters with Double Dutch Double Lemon Lemonade and lime juice or cordial.

Vestal Releases Fruity Expressions

Polish potato-based brand, Vestal Vodka, has released its first flavoured expressions: Black Cherry, and Raspberry and Blackcurrant.

Bottled at 40% ABV, the two flavours are based on traditional Polish fruit-based vodkas known as ‘nalewka’. They are both made by macerating Vestal’s 2015 vintage vodka.

Vestal Vodka is made from potatoes grown in Kaszebe in the north of Poland. The brand was founded by bar owner William Borrell in 2011.

In January this year, UK-based Halewood Wines & Spirits acquired a 48% stake in Vestal Vodka for an undisclosed sum.

To mark the deal, Vestal released a new bottle design and the 2015 vintage vodka, which is said to have the longest known rest period for any vodka at four years.

Teeling Releases 37-Year-Old Irish Single Malt

Dublin-based Irish Whisky distillers, Teeling, has released a 37 Years Old Irish Single Malt into their limited release Vintage Reserve Collection.

Only 175 bottles of the 37-year-old whiskey have been created, following previous launches of a 30-year-old and 33-year-old as part of the collection.

The latest release was distilled in 1983 and matured exclusively in an ex-Bourbon cask for 37 years. It has been hand-bottled at 41.3% ABV.

For now, the whiskey is available from the Teeling Whiskey Distillery in Dublin, but availability will soon be extended to select partners and retailers domestically and internationally.

Jack Teeling, founder of the Teeling Whiskey Company, said: “We are extremely proud and lucky to be able to release some of the oldest ever bottlings of Irish single malt with our Vintage Reserve Collection.

“There is nothing else like these Irish single malts on the market and each one represents a rare piece of Irish whiskey history in each bottle.”

Whitley Neill Adds Lime & Strawberry Flavours

Whitney Neill has expanded its gin range with the launch of two limited-edition flavours: Brazilian Lime, and Strawberry and Black Pepper.

The new expressions which comes in at 43% ABV, is said to tap into the latest trends within the flavoured gin category – citrus and strawberry.

Kelly Coughlan, manager for white spirits at Halewood Wines & Spirits, said: “The popularity of flavoured gin is showing no sign of slowing down – driven in part by lockdown, with people becoming generally more experimental with new flavours and formats.

“Our Whitley Neill flavoured gin variants have always appealed to those more experimental tastes, and these two new flavours are no exception – bringing beautifully balanced, fruity flavours which take inspiration from around the world.”

According to Nielsen figures cited by the brand, citrus-flavoured gin is witnessing “strong” growth, boosted by consumer demand for citrus-based cocktails. The new Brazilian Lime Gin capitalises on this trend and also takes inspiration from creator Johnny Neill’s travels across South America.

Brazilian Lime is described as having notes of “zesty freshly peeled limes”, a “herbaceous punch” of juniper and “earthy-sweet undertones of liquorice” on the finish. The gin is recommended as a base for Caipirinhas or Gimlets or served with tonic water with a wedge of lime.

Meanwhile, Strawberry and Black Pepper is inspired by Neill and his family grown strawberries at home in Devon, England. The resulting liquid has the “bold and fruity” scent of Devon strawberries, along with hints of black peppercorns and strawberry jam. It is recommended served in a cocktail or with light tonic water and garnished with strawberries and basil leaves.
