Islay-based distillery Bruichladdich has unveiled a new series of heavily peated Octomore Scotch whiskies – Octomore 11s.

Set to launch on 1 October, the Octomore 11s range includes three expressions that will be available to purchase from specialist retailers and online via

Single malt Octomore 11.1 was matured for five years in first-fill ex-American whiskey casks from Jim Beam, Heaven Hill and Jack Daniel’s. Malted to 139.6 PPM (phenol parts per million), Octomore 11.1 has been bottled at 59.4% ABV without chill-filtration or caramel colouring.

Malted to 139.6 PPM, Octomore 11.2 was matured in two separate casks: 25% of the whisky was aged in Pauillac ex-wine casks, while the remaining 75% was aged in ex-American whiskey casks before being transferred into St Julien wine casks for 18 months. All in all, the whisky was aged for five years on Islay before being bottled at 58.6% ABV without added colouring or chill-filtration.

The third whisky in the new series will be Octomore 11.3 (malted to 194 PPM), which was matured for five years in first-fill American whiskey casks from Jim Beam, Heaven Hill, Buffalo Trace and Jack Daniel’s. The whisky was bottled at 61.7% ABV without caramel colouring or chill-filtration.

Vodka producer Belvedere is expanding its portfolio with the launch of Belvedere Heritage 176, a new malted rye spirit that is technically not Vodka.

Due to European law, Heritage 176 cannot be called ‘vodka’ because the malted rye spirit was distilled to 92% rather than the required 96% for vodka.

The new release aims to challenge neutrality in vodka and celebrate the technique of malting rye that was widely used by Polish rye vodka makers until the 1890s.

The brand’s master rye distillers experimented with different levels of malted rye in the final spirit and concluded that 2% delivered the ‘most complex flavour profile’.

Rodney Williams, president and CEO of Belvedere Vodka, said: “Belvedere remains committed to showcasing that rye can impart unexpected, authentic and nuanced taste.

“In 2018, our release of two different single estate rye vodkas based on the same strain of rye demonstrated that terroir plays a significant role in shaping rye flavours.

“Now with Heritage 176 we are continuing to display rye’s enormous potential for rich and bold flavours, this time by malting rye to bring out its depth of flavour. Heritage 176 is a new sipping vodka-based [on] an old production technique.”

The new Captain Morgan Sliced Apple Spiced Rum is a blend of the brand’s signature Original Spiced Rum, a subtle hint of ginger and fresh-cut apples. The apples are said to be “sweet, yet tart” and full of flavour.

Bottled at 35% ABV, the expression is said to “shake up the rum category” and is recommended served neat, as a chilled shot or over ice. It can also be added to cocktails like an Apple Mule, which combines the rum with ginger beer.

“Captain Morgan has always been about uniting the crew and creating lasting memories,” said Sam Salameh, vice-president of Diageo-owned Captain Morgan.

“These days, we all could benefit from a little more fun in our lives – there’s always more fun to be had with Captain Morgan, and the crisp, fall-inspired flavour of Captain Morgan Sliced Apple is the latest proof of just that.”

The product is not the first apple-flavoured variant from Captain Morgan. In August 2018, the brand expanded its shot-inspired range with the launch of Apple Smash.

Created by Cécile Roudaut, St-Rémy master blender, each expression in the Cask Finish Collection is a “distinctive exploration into the encounter between French brandies and wood”.

Bottled at 40%ABV, Roudaut selected 10 casks that previously held Oloroso Sherry, from the Spanish city of Jerez. The casks brought notes of red fruits, cherry, fig, dates, fresh butter, ginger and liquorice to the brandy.

Roudaut said: “The dance between brandy and Sherry wood is like an expressive tango. The oloroso Sherry casks create incredibly rich notes of red fruits, figs, dates, and cooked and candied fruits to St-Rémy brandy.”

Roudaut’s time working in the wine industry inspired her cask selection. Prior to working in spirits, she learned about the winemaking process and grape varieties and explored the influences of casks.

The new expression will launch this month in Canada, Mexico, Norway, Finland, UAE, Taiwan, Russia and China. From 2021, the product will be available in global travel retail markets such as UAE, Australia, Germany, Canada, New Zealand, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman and Singapore.
