Normally, you don’t think of coasters as being particularly smart. In fact, more often than not, they potentially lead to some down right idiotic decisions when people put their numbers on them.
But Barsys, a cocktail technology company, has developed a product that will not only change that impression but also provide a useful bit of tech that could prove smarter than your average bartender.
The new “smart coaster” provides more than just a place to set your drink, as it is a digital device that can actually help you make your drink and can, as the company boasts, “turns customers into instant mixologists”.
Simply choose one of over 2,000 cocktails you want to make in the Bluetooth-connected Barsys app. The app allows you to sort by things like mixers or brands if you need ideas. Then you just simply place any glass (or any pitcher) on the digital coaster, and then follow the step-by-step instructions on the app.
The coaster will help you by weighing all the ingredients as you add them to the drink. With each ingredient, the color of the coaster gradually changes from green to yellow to red to let you know when to stop pouring.
“Most people don’t realize how many great cocktails they can make from just a few simple ingredients. All they’re missing is the know-how to put it together,” said Akshet Tewari, the founder and CEO of Barsys.
“With the Coaster,” Tewari continued, “we set out to make serving a cocktail as easy as grabbing a beer or pouring a glass of wine. Cocktail-making requires a level of skill and precision that anyone can now obtain.”
The app walks users through the process step-by-step while the Coaster senses how much liquid has been added. The Coaster lights change colour to indicate when to start and stop pouring each ingredient, preventing any drinks from being too strong — unless you want it that way!
Users can access an extensive library of cocktails and experiment with new drink combinations using the Barsys App. The app is free for anyone to use, with or without the purchase of a Barsys device. Following the launch of the Coaster, Barsys will also introduce a new app feature that brings social networking to the world of cocktails.
Through this platform, users can follow influencers, share cocktail “Mixlists,” and get inspired by others’ recipes, which can be recreated by hand or by using The Barsys Coaster. Consumers have the option to select and add cocktails from Barsys pre-made cocktail lists to their individualised Mixlists.
The Barsys Mixer comes as a gift with all pre-order purchases, pairing seamlessly with the Coaster to perfectly blend cocktails. Consumers can pre-order their Coasters for $95 through the Barsys website (www.thebarsys.com) and will be officially launched in December with an MSRP of $149.
The Coaster is perfect for experimenting with new custom-created cocktails or trying pre-programmed cocktails stored in the app library. Internal coils control the RPMs to automatically shake or stir your cocktail depending on the recipe selection. The electromagnetic device doesn’t require any charging or battery power, just place it on the Coaster and watch it spin.
