Finally, An Anti-Christmas Party

Not that you should ever need a reason to put on a cocktail party but in case you do, we give you a weekly reason to get a few friends over.

Let’s face it, this time of year is a social whirl.

You’ve probably been to more Christmas parties than there are days in December, stood under far too much mistletoe (always with the wrong people) and been surrounded by so much tinsel that everything has a shimmer.

You’ve drunk your bosses really bad eggnog, you’ve been victim to really stupid secret Santa gifts and come to the realisation that no one looks good in a Santa hat.

Now don’t get us wrong, Christmas is one of those time of year that’s hard to hate, after all, it’s all about good will. But even for the best among us, it can all get a bit much.

For all of the joy that the season brings, there is also a fair amount of saccharine. There tends to be a thick sugar coating on everything from Christmas Carols on high rotation to the guilt-laden commercialism that wants you to think that expensive is better.

Honestly, the run-up to December 25, can be filled with so much unnecessary sentimentality that there is very little you can do but take at least one night out for anti-Christmas gathering.

So why not gather your friends on this last weekend before the big day and put on the least festive Christmas party you can manage. In other words taking the best of Christmas – the drinking, your friends and a good dose of scepticism and try to leave all the rest behind.

Approach

If you’re going to do an unfestive Christmas party, then you really need to start things off with some anti-decorating. Scrap the lights, the ornaments and the representations of Rodolph and let’s get back to basics.

Yep, you guessed it, if we going trim that tree, we’re going to do it with booze. The entry requirement to this little gathering is going to be a mini-bottle of spirits with a little string tied around its neck.

As anyone who has spent any time with mini booze bottles will know, where is a sense of magical wonder that is created when the light hits the glass in a certain way. So your tree will sparkle but let’s face it this year it will be for the right reasons.

And while you are carefully placing those mini-bottles of Gin or Whiskey on the tree branches, you really have to have one of the greatest Christmas but not Christmas movies ever made playing in the background. Yes, it’s time to hit play on Bruce Willis’ Diehard.

Cocktails

But of course putting mini booze bottles of a tree can be hard work, so we recommend frequently stopping to refreshing yourself with drinks like Santa Baby

And a nice Gingerbread Cocktail

Food

Christmas Cracker Starters with Squash, Pistachios, almonds and Dried Cranberries are really just the perfect food
